HORS SATAN

Last weekend the L'âge d'or/Filmvondsten festival started out in Cinematek.

The most anticipated film of the festival is beyond a doubt Bruno Dumont's Hors Satan (one of two films he will be releasing in 2011, the other one being L'empire). Dumont seems to be continuing research on one his prevelant themes: (the lacking of) the sacral in contemporary society.

Hopefully Dumont wont fall of his "piédestal" like his compatriot Gaspar Noé did last year with the surprisingly nugatory and thus appropriately titled Enter the Void. Both directors got categorized in what Art Forum critic James Quandt dubbed the New French Extremity.

SAUVEZ LE CINEMA ARENBERG / RED CINEMA ARENBERG

Film in it's traditional screening format is obviously experiencing an existential crisis.

With excellent and thriving cinemas like Cinema Nova, Cinematek, Bozar Cinema and Cinema Arenberg (Beursschouwburg's DocHouse series is also worth mentioning), Brussels seemed exempt from that trend.Unfortunately one of those places, Cinema Arenberg, will be forced out their location by the owner. Sing this petition in their support.

UMSHINI WAM

Harmony Korine succeeded where David Fincher failed. He managed to get rapper Jolandi Visser, of the much hyped Die Antwoord, to act in one of his films. Visser supposedly turned down the lead role in Fincher's remake of the Swedish crime thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo (Män som hatar kvinnor).

VIDEOGRAMME EINER REVOLUTION

If you were one of the millions worldwide who watched the Egyption revolution unfold live on Al Jazeera, I would advise you to have a look at Harun Farocki and Andrei Ujica’s Videogramme einer Revolution (1992), which reconstructs the downfall of Romanian leader Nicolae Ceaucescu in 1989.

Just as much a detached dictator as Hosni Mubarak, Ceaucesu also got overthrown by a popular uprisinig which epicentered on a big central square. Ceaucescu’s fate was far more gruesome as he got excecuted on Christmas eve after an hour long mock trial.

Farocki and Ujica constructed their account out of independent and state video sources. a technique that reminded me of Thomas Heisse’s similar reconstruction of the German Wende Material (2009) - my personal favorite at the FID Marseille 2009 and also winner of the Grand Prix of the International Competition. Co-director Ujica returned to the subject in last years Autobiografia lui Nicolae Ceausescu, which ranked among the twelve best films of 2010 in a poll conducted by Sight and Sound.

A Sequel To Happiness

Meer dan vijf jaar na Palindromes komt Todd Solonz nog eens met een film op de proppen.

Zelf noemt hij Life During Wartime een quasi remake van Hapinness. Op basis van deze featurette (ARTE) lijk het een duffe praatfilm te worden met een vreemde cast: Charlotte Rampling, Paul 'Pee Wee Herman' Ruebens en 80's icoon Ally Sheedy.

IFFR 2009

Gisterenavond is het 38e Internationaal Filmfestival Rotterdam van start gegaan.

Buiten het reguliere programma zijn er gewoontegetrouw weer allerhande 'sideshows'.

Roodkapje organiseert het REJECT FESTIVAL.

WORM stelde een programma samen met films en muziek van onder andere Oren Ambarchi, Jeff Keen, Peter Rehberg, Aethenor, Brent Coughenour en Anla Courtis. Laatstgenoemde zal op 13 februari ook films begeleiden bij MuHKA_media tijdens ULTRA ECZEMA's Overbodige Luxe, een nieuwe reeks avonden samengesteld door Dennis Tyfus.

En TENT is er de expo Aspect Ratio met werk van o.A. Roy Arden, Morgan Fischer, Ken Jacobs en Charles & Ray Eames. In het kader van deze expo zijner ook performances en lezingen in Lantaren/Venster. Het is alvast uitkijken naar de performance van Bruce McClure op zondagavond.

CRISPIN GLOVER IN AMSTERDAM!

Het International Amsterdam Film Festival, een uitloper van ResFest Amsterdam, ontvangt op 17 oktober Crispin Hellion Glover!

Crispin Glover is vooral bekend van rollen als George McFly in Back To The Future, Layne in River's Edge, Rubin in het totaal waanzinnige Rubin and Ed, en een hilarische Andy Warhol in The Doors.

In 1989 maakte hij ook een plaat: het door Barnes & Barnes geproducete The Big Problem Does Not Equal the Solution. The Solution Equals Let It Be. met daarop Clowny Clown Clown

Op het IAFF komt hij deel twee van zijn 'It' trilogie voorstellen: It Is Fine. Everything Is Fine! (Deel 1 was What Is It?) Vooraf leest hij voor uit een van zijn romans, achteraf is er een Q & A.
